The Company of Animals Dog Tornado Interactive Dog Game

The idea behind the Dog Tornado is for the dog to dislodge the removable bones, then turn the revolving sections in order to receive the hidden treats. You may choose to put treats in one, several or all of compartments, depending upon the dog's experience and enthusiasm for the game. The Tornado has many variables to increase the level of difficulty as the dog's skill increases. The bones have a small hole to allow the scent of the treat to pass through and encourage him to use and develop his extraordinary sense of smell. With a little practice, he will soon learn to dislodge the bones and turn the Tornado to access hidden rewards. By gradually reducing the number of treats, you can encourage him to work harder for rewards. A great way to mentally stimulate and challenge your dog. We recommend that introduction to the game be gradual and progressive, so that the dog does not become frustrated or overexcited. We want him to use brain not brawn to uncover the puzzle.

1.) Remove the bones and align the three bottom sections of the Tornado. Twist the top cover so that two compartments are clearly open and place a treat in each. Allow the dog to approach and eat the food, to familiarize him with Dog Tornado.

2.) Repeat until he is happy and confident to take the treats.

3.) Next, with the dog watching but under control, place a treat in all four of the top compartments, then turn the cover of the Tornado slightly so that half of two compartments are on show. Allow him to approach the Dog Tornado.

4.) If he turns the cover and uncovers the treat, praise him then encourage repeats on the other compartments. If necessary, turn the cover slightly for him so that he can see and smell the treats. Repeat, gradually introducing more treats and closing the gap over the treats until he is happily turning the cover of the Tornado.

5.) If the dog has not managed to turn the cover of the Tornado within a minute, open it a little wider for him so that he is motivated to continue. Repeat, gradually closing the cover over the gap until he gets the idea.

6.) Next, close the top of the Tornado and turn the whole top section through 90 degrees so that two of the underlying second section compartments are on show.

7.) Repeat the training for the second section in exactly the same way you taught the top section.

8.) Ensure that the top section is also loaded with treats so that the dog continues to be rewarded if he chooses to work the top section as well.

9.) Next you can introduce the third section, following the same procedure as above.

10.) Once he is confident at turning all the sections of the Tornado, you can make the game more difficult by introducing the bone.

11.) Again, with the dog watching but under control, place a treat in one compartment and cover with a bone. Allow the dog to approach the Dog Tornado and encourage him to "find it". If he dislodges the bone and earns the treat, praise him and repeat.

12.) If the dog has not dislodged the bone within a minute, remove it to maintain his motivation. Replace the treat and sit the bone horizontally across the gap rather than allowing it to fit into its vertical fit. This way the bone should be easily dislodged by even the shyest dog. Repeat until confident, then place the bone correctly and repeat as earlier.

13.) Once the dog is confidently dislodging the bone and turning the Tornado, you can vary the number and location of the treats and the bones in all the sections.
