Zoo Med All Natural Reptile Terrarium Moss Substrate
Zoo Med All Natural Reptile Terrarium Moss Substrate is a green product made from harvested moss using sustainable methods to ensure that it will be around for future generations. Our completely natural moss cage substrate is ideal for amphibians and snakes such as frogs, toads, salamanders, garter or green snakes. Adding moss can be used to create attractive hiding places for lizards and snakes to reduce stress and make them feel secure. In addition, our moss substrate is also great for use in humidifying shelters for all types of reptiles and amphibians and is excellent for use as an egg-laying and incubation medium for a variety of reptiles.
New Moss: Open package and place moss in a clean bucket of water. Squeeze moss and allow it to absorb water. Remove moss from water and "wring out" only leaving 15-20% moisture in the moss. Place in the terrarium around a low shallow water dish and build moss around the edges of the dish so your animals can easily get in and out of the water. To prevent possible drowning of smaller animals put a sponge or a piece of driftwood in the water dish.Naturalistic Terrarium: Our moss is a great top substrate for the naturalistic terrarium set-up. Below the terrarium moss use 2-3" of Zoo Med's Eco Earth, sold separately to provide a burrowing substrate for toads, salamanders, small snakes, hermit crabs and other terrarium animals.
Cleaning: Our moss can be washed and reused several times before replacing with new moss. Frequency of cleaning will depend on the number if animals in your terrarium. Amphibians absorb water through their skin and are sensitive to toxins in their environment. If you detect a foul odor, or suspect that the moss may be dirty, you should clean or replace the moss.
To Clean: Remove the moss from your terrarium and place in a bucket of clean, dechlorinated water. Swirl the moss in the water, then remove it and "wring out" as much water as possible. Repeat this process until the moss appears clean and no foul odor is detected. Our moss should last 2 to 3 cleanings before it needs to be replaced with new moss.
