Antennata Lionfish (aka Spotfin Lionfish)
The Antennata Lionfish is also known as the Spotfin Lionfish. As with other Lionfish, this species will gracefully float along through the water column stopping along the way as part of its regular behavior. When acclimating, it is normal for the Antennata Lionfish to hide and isolate itself.
Antennata Lionfish - Living Environment
Adapts to captivity easily when provided with adequate hiding spots such as crevices and caves. Plenty of swimming room is needed as is subdued lighting as this species is more active at night than during the day.
Antennata Lionfish - Special Care Info
As with all Lionfish, the spines located across its dorsal, pectoral, and anal fins are venomous. The likelyhood of a sting is a very uncommon event, but should not be taken lightly. Although the venom is stronger than a bee sting, every person reacts differently to the venom. The sting can be treated by soaking the injured area in hot water, somewhere around 100° F or as hot as possible for a duration of 15 to 20 minutes. This will denature the proteins in the toxins preventing spreading into the bloodstream. Be sure to remove any broken spines if necessary. It is highly recommended to get medical treatment even after soaking the affected area.
