Decorator Crab (aka Decorator Spider Crab)
One of the more fascinating crabs, this species is also known as the Spider Decorator Crab due to its resemblance to spiders. It is also in the family of spiders and crabs, Majidae. A nocturnal hunter, the Crab gets its name due to its propensity to decorate its own body with pieces of coral, shells, rocks, and anything else it can use as camouflage leaving only its eyes visible. While traveling around the tank, the Decorator Crab may take pieces of soft corals, sponges, and other invertebrates to attach to its carapace and legs. Although the Crab may initially damage soft corals and polyps, the Crab usually ends up propagating and spreading the same organisms. Preferring sandy bottoms, the Decorator Crab is difficult to see when not in motion.
