Your live fish may not match the image shown due to natural variations in each species. Each companion animal is different in shape, color, and personality.
This nocturnal fish is known for its compressed, stocky, silver body lacking a dorsal fin, with a tail that resembles a sword blade. These fish are usually shy and hide during the day but provide activity in the tank at night. Although not generally a jumper, a tight fitting lid is recommended as well as floating plants. This will reduce the amount of light coming into the tank as well, which is preferred by the African Knifefish.
The African Knifefish requires many hiding places such as upside-down pots, pipes, and heavy amounts of plants. Juveniles do fine together, but may not tolerate each other or smaller peaceful fish as adults. Although this species has been known to grow up to 12 inches in length in the wild, most African Knifefish in captivity only reach 4 inches.
