Converting To Exact Rainbow: If your bird is not familiar with processed food, use one of the three following conversion method to insure it is receiving the right amount of food. If any problems result, or if your bird is being extremely difficult to convert, return to the previous step in the conversion process. After approximately seven days, continue with the conversion process. 1) Portions Method: This method is recommended since it is fast and safe for all healthy birds. Phase exact into your bird's diet by mixing it with the current seed diet. Best results are achieved when you limit the total quantity of food available to match the suggested daily feeding amount. Day 1-3 : 1 part exact - 3 parts current food. Day 4-8: 2 parts exact -2 parts current food. Day 9-14 3 parts exact - 1 part current food. After 14 days : Feed exact only - your bird should be completely converted. 2) Free Choice Method: This method is the simplest but takes the longest time since the bird is given more opportunity to select its familiar food. Follow instructions for the Portions Method, but provide more than the recommended daily amount. After 14 days, continue for another tow weeks by putting exact in the bottom of the cup. Sprinkle a small amount of the current food (about 10%) on top. Gradually reduce amount of the current food or offer it on alternate days. This method is very easy on the bird since the bird is able to choose what is eats and slowly adapt to a new diet. Within one month, even the most difficult bird can be converted with this method. 3) Immediate Conversion: This method works best with young birds and those accustomed to a widely varied diet. Sudden food changes may be refused by finicky eaters and may be dangerous to birds which are not healthy. Observe your bird closely when using this method. Check its body weight or breast muscle size to watch for weight loss. If your bird loses over 10% of its body weight, provide mixture of current food and exact for about 3 days before returning exclusively to exact.
Important Notes:
- Conversion time may vary. Observe your bird closely. If you have any questions regarding the conversion process, call the Kaytee Helpline toll-free: 1-800-KAYTEE-1.
- When more than one bird is kept in a cage, monitor birds very closely and extend the conversion process beyond 14 days by following the Free Choice Method.
- Small birds should be monitored closely during the conversion process. If the bird becomes listless, sits with its feathers fluffed, or loses weight, it may not be consuming enough food. If these signs occur, immediately provide the "old" food and a mixture of equal parts exact and the "old" food (in separate dishes) until the bird returns to normal activity (approximately 3 days). At this time, remove the dish of "old" food and continue the conversion process.
- Initial acceptance of exact can be improved by moistening with fruit juice. Be sure to remove uneaten portion within 4 hours to prevent spoilage.
- The color of droppings may not be consistent, but they should be well formed.
