At Petco, our top priority is always the health and well-being of animals, which is why it’s important to us that we provide you with information to help you make good choices for your pets.
Since September 2007, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has periodically cautioned consumers about a potential link between reported illnesses in dogs and consumption of jerky products made in China.
Despite ongoing testing, the FDA has been unable to identify a definitive cause of the reported dog illnesses and has been unable to establish a direct link between the reported illnesses and China-sourced jerky products.
On October 22, 2013, the FDA released an update on its investigation into pet illnesses and deaths associated with jerky treats from China, including a letter to U.S. veterinarians requesting their help with the investigation by reporting any cases of jerky-related illnesses and providing samples for diagnostic testing. They also included a new jerky treats fact sheet for pet owners.
Neither the FDA nor our suppliers have recommended a recall of jerky products. However, for our customers who prefer an alternative to jerky products manufactured in China, we are actively expanding our selection of these types of products manufactured in other locations.
For example, we offer several brands of U.S.-made jerky treats, including American Jerky, which is exclusive to Petco and 100 percent sourced and manufactured in America. We also carry a vast selection of other natural treat and chew options.
We continue to monitor the situation closely for any new information and will continue to share what we know with our customers.
