Letter from Paul Jolly By the Numbers

I'm thrilled to introduce and welcome you to the first issue of our new quarterly newsletter, Foundation Tails. Last year, the PETCO Foundation celebrated a decade of making a difference for animals - and what an amazing decade it was!

As we embark on the next 10 years, we're focused on improving how we work and communicate with you - our generous and committed donors. Without you, the last 10 years would not have been possible.

In each issue of Foundation Tails, we'll share accomplishments and touching stories that result from your support and we'll let you know what's coming up in the months ahead. We hope you enjoy Foundation Tails. Let us know what you think of the newsletter, what else you'd like to see included, share a story with us - or just say hello.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of our important work and mission. Together, we are truly making a difference in the lives of millions of animals and the people who love and need them.

Paul Jolly

Getting to Know

...the Humane Society for Hamilton County

If the name of this PETCO Foundation charitable partner sounds familiar, you must have been following the touching success story of Nico, the Dogo Argentino, who was taken under the group's adoption wing after having been rescued from a shelter in Los Angeles and an uncertain future.

The Humane Society for Hamilton County, under the guidance of Executive Director Rebecca Stevens, runs several programs to assist pets in need. Though often at capacity in their shelter, Rebecca knows that sometimes the issues facing homeless pets in our nation is larger than their surrounding county. When they can, they reach beyond their own walls and volunteers to help the helpless.
Nico was such an instance. When the group learned of Nico's tragic situation more than 1,500 miles away, they worked with partners and volunteers across the country to transport him - from California to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illonois and finally to their location in Indiana - so they could give him a second chance at life and love.

Through the group's determined efforts, Nico found his forever home in November 2009. Like so many of our partners, the Humane Society for Hamilton County truly shows us that when it comes to helping animals in need, we're really all in this together.

New Pet Food Bank Program Helps Keep Pets with their Families

Did you know that one in every eight Americans takes advantage of food bank programs around the country?

Many of these people have pets they consider part of their families, but when food banks don't offer pet food or litter, or human food portions become too stretched, some are forced to make the heartbreaking decision to relinquish their faithful pet companions.

That's where we come in. As animal lovers, we simply refuse to accept that anyone should have to go through the pain of giving up their pets because of financial distress.

So, PETCO and the PETCO Foundation this month begin building a nationwide network of pet food banks by placing specially marked collection bins in more than 529 PETCO stores in select markets - the second phase of a national rollout.

The bins provide an easy way for customers and other pet lovers to donate dog and cat food and cat litter donations brought from home or purchased during their shopping trip.

Each PETCO store will partner with a human food bank that has a pet food component, or with an animal welfare group that has set up its own pet food bank, to donate food directly to economically stressed pet parents in that store's local community.

The Pet Food Bank program, which is an extension of our 'We Are Family, Too' fund, rolls out in three phases this spring. Check with your local PETCO to see when the PETCO Foundation Pet Food Bank program and bins will arrive in your community.

Just For Fun
I'm Home Photo Contest

Proceeds from this contest will benefit homeless pets nationwide.

Home for our pets can be so many things, from basking in the sunlight to lazing on the couch, to play time in the yard and hikes in the mountains. Home is lap time and nap time and food time and play time. Home is comfort and safety. It is a full belly and a warm bed. Home is playing in the sprinklers and rolling in fresh catnip. For most pets, home is wherever you are and whatever you are doing with them.

Start looking for your best photos that address this theme and upload them to the contest site before April 30. This year you can also vote for your favorites in a new People's Choice category!

Think Adoption First

PETCO Steps Up Adoption Efforts Nationwide

None of the PETCO Foundation's work would be possible without the incredible passion and support of 22,000 PETCO associates in more than 1,000 stores across the country. Their unwavering commitment to animals enables us to make a difference for more than 200,000 homeless animals every year.

In 2010, the company is upping the ante with a bigger commitment than ever before. In addition to ongoing local adoption events held in PETCO stores virtually every weekend, PETCO will host one National Adoption Weekend every month throughout the year.

These national events are designed to increase awareness about adoptions, educate customers about the company's Think Adoption First philosophy and help more animals find the loving forever homes they deserve. National Adoption Weekend events will typically be held on the third weekend of the month.

The next National Adoption Weekend will be Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18. If you haven't done so already, make sure to get in touch your local PETCO General Manager to find out how your group can participate in these events.
