About the Petco Foundation

The Petco Foundation has served as a voice for companion animals across the country since 1999. Each year, we help animal-welfare organizations find lifelong, loving homes for millions of orphaned pets, as well as fund spay and neuter efforts, animal assisted therapy programs and humane education.

About

The Petco Foundation's mission is to raise the quality of life for pets and people who love and need them. The Petco Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation (#33-0845930) that supports other IRS (Internal Revenue Service) designated non-profit pet related groups as well as municipal/governmental agencies and educational institutions involved in animal causes.

Fiscal Responsibility

Today, the Petco Foundation donates about $15 million a year to assist companion animals across the country. The organization is funded through donations raised during seasonal fundraisers conducted in Petco's 1,000 plus stores in all 50 United States, as well as from Petco associates, vendors and corporate contributions.. The majority of the funds raised remain in the community in which they were raised, but the Petco Foundation is also involved in many national animal welfare efforts.

Charity Navigator is the #1 independent evaluator of non profits in the United States. They have consistently given Petco Foundation high ratings. More than 85% of every dollar we raise directly supports the life affirming programs of the animal welfare groups we call partners.

Guidestar Exchange Charity

The Petco Foundation has received the GuideStar Exchange Seal, a leading symbol of transparency and accountability provided by GuideStar USA, Inc., the premier source of nonprofit information. The Seal demonstrates our deep commitment to nonprofit transparency and accountability. The GuideStar Exchange is an initiative designed to connect nonprofits with current and potential supporters. The GuideStar Exchange allows nonprofits to share a wealth of up-to-date information with GuideStar's many audiences.

Grants

We provide monetary grants directly to more than 8,000 local animal-welfare organizations in communities nationwide, in most cases to help support day-to-day operations and special projects. These are mostly small humane non profits, who collectively provide the majority of animal rescue work today.

There are four types of grants that can be requested through the Petco Foundation:

  • Capital Grants - larger funding for buildings, construction or equipment, rather than program or operating expenses
  • Product Support - product to be donated from the Petco Foundation. These donations can be used for General operations, Special event/goodie bags, Feeding program/food bank, Disaster relief, Silent Auction, Transport/Holding/Adoptions...
  • We Are Family Too - short-term and seed funding for animal welfare groups to help pet owners who have lost their homes or are experiencing temporary financial hurdles. We Are Family, Too funds such programs as Pet food banks, Product donations, Referral lists of pet-friendly housing, Short-term foster pet care, Veterinary services...
  • 4 Rs Project Support - for projects that support the Petco Foundation 4Rs: Reduce (spay/neuter); Rescue (adoptions); Rehabilitate (training); Rejoice (promotes and assists with the human/animal bond). Items covered by this type of grant include General veterinary services, Spay/Neuter, Trap/Neuter/Return (for feral animals), Sponsorship of an event, Adoptions, Training, Animal Assisted Therapy, Dog Parks, Emergency, Humane Education, Equipment Purchase (can also be applied for under Capital Grants)

In-Store Adoption Events

In Store Adoption Events

We assist local animal welfare groups to facilitate in-store adoption events at Petco locations all over the country every weekend. The opportunity to offer adoptions through Petco stores provides shelters and other animal-welfare organizations with easy access to people looking to adopt great companion animals - an important step in reducing the number of homeless animals that are euthanized each year.

Animal Rescue/Disaster Relief

In coordination with Petco, we donate pet food and supplies to help animals affected by natural and man-made disasters. These may include floods, fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and even hoarder and puppy mills raids. We also coordinate donations of in-kind goods and services for animal rescues to provide general support for the animals they serve.

Spay/Neuter Programs

Pet overpopulation remains one of the biggest issues facing companion animals and animal-welfare organizations nationwide. To help address this issue, we provide monetary grants to support spay/neuter programs and efforts.

"We Are Family Too" Fund

Americans are in the depths of a harsh economy and are feeling the stress of it every day - at work and at home with their families. We created the We Are Family Too fund in 2008 to provide funding to humane groups to develop programs that help financially strapped families keep their companion animals - rather than relinquish them to a shelter or abandon them altogether - in times of financial stress. Through We Are Family Too, we've helped fund programs including pet food banks, resources for pet-friendly rentals, short-term foster homes and financial support for animal-welfare groups dealing with huge increases in surrendered animals.

Education

KIND News

To help educate more children and adults about the humane treatment of animals and the importance of responsible pet ownership, we support local humane education programs. In partnership with the Humane Society of the United States, we help provide KIND News, an award-winning classroom newspaper and curriculum that encourages good character in children with an emphasis on kindness to animals and respect for natural habitats, in a thousand classrooms nationwide.
