First Supplies for Your Ferret
Here is a list of small animal supplies, grouped by category, that you should purchase for your ferret before you bring him home for the first time. You may add more items as time passes, and you become more familiar with the particular needs of your pet.

Furniture
Your ferret will benefit from safe, comfortable furniture in its cage. Ferrets do not need very much in the way of furniture, but they will be very happy with a few simple pieces for their small animal cages. Here are some examples of small animal supplies such as hammocks and other pieces of furniture.

Hamster Bedding
Any small animal supplies used for hamster bedding, also referred to as substrate, should be digestible and non-fibrous. The following are commonly used choices for bedding materials: Pelleted/Chipped Paper Product Litter, Wood Shavings and Shredded Paper. In addition to bedding, your hamster requires nesting material, which he will gather and make into a nest in which to sleep.

Cleaning Supplies and Equipment
Nothing can put a damper on gerbil ownership more quickly than unpleasant odors and the sight of dirty small animal cages, food dishes and toys. You need to clean and sterilize your gerbil's cage, dishes, toys and the other small animal supplies she uses on a regular basis.

Housing and Cages
There is no lack of variety when it comes to housing for your small animals. You can build a veritable city for your hamster with different combinations of small animal cages, tubes, tunnels, penthouse suites and a variety of other features.

Toys
When selecting toys for your small animals, keep in mind that gerbils will quickly chew apart and destroy any plastic item they’re given. Gerbils enjoy running, hiding, chewing, burrowing, climbing, jumping and playing. Toys designed for small animals cultivate these favored activities and are grouped according to the activity they promote.
