Everyone knows that PETCO is "where the pets go," but it's also where great people grow! At PETCO, we select and develop a team of excited associates who are passionate about animals and understand the special bond between customers and their pets.
All kinds of opportunities exist to build knowledge and skills at PETCO! Training is offered for associates at all levels in our stores, regional support centers and the National Support Center in San Diego, California.

Would you like to work in a PETCO store, helping customers and building your knowledge of our animals, products and services?
Store associates complete our Pet Authority training to develop knowledge in these areas. We recognize that knowledgeable associates take pride in what they do, and they encourage customers to return by building relationships with them and their pets and by providing accurate, timely information.
Do you enjoy retail operations and aspire to manage your own PETCO store?
The Management Achievement Program (MAP), a development program for store Operations and Merchandising Managers, covers a broad range of knowledge and skills. A few topics available through workshops and self-study modules include: companion animal and aquatic care, ways to manage inventory, behaviors that exceed customers' expectations, guidelines to build a store team, and the importance of legal and ethical issues in a retail environment.
Would you like to follow a career path that allows you to gain in-depth knowledge and skill in working with companion animals or aquatic life?
We realize that not everyone is interested in a management career track. If you are an animal enthusiast, PETCO offers an extensive training program where you can specialize in one or more departments (aquatic, avian, reptile, or small animal). Not only will you learn about the animals, you will also learn about matching pets to customers and other business-related skills required to head up a successful companion animal or aquatic life department.
Are you interested in a role in a corporate environment, providing support to stores?
At our National Support Center (NSC), located in San Diego, California, we hire individuals who value animals and who have an expertise in a variety of areas such as accounting, human resources, merchandising, communications, operations, information systems, and training.
Associates at the NSC have a variety of opportunities to develop new skills and acquire knowledge:
- The PETCO Associate Welcome (PAW) program helps new associates learn about PETCO's history, culture and basic operations.
- PetSoft University offers extensive computer training.
- Individual development plans are used to target specific areas for specialized outside training such as workshops and continuing education courses.
- Effective Motivational Management (EMM) classes are offered for those who lead others to sharpen their skills and develop plans for their career path.
