Choosing the Right Bird

There's nothing worse than bringing home a new baby and not having any diapers in the house. Here is a list of supplies you need for your newest baby - your bird. She will be somewhat stressed by the ride home, so do everything you can to place her calmly and safely in her new environment. It is imperative to have the essential items on hand when you first bring your bird home. Optional supplies may easily be accumulated on an as-needed basis.

Essential Supplies

  • Cage
  • Food and water dishes (usually included with cage, but be sure to check)
  • Bird food (seeds, pellets or nectar, depending on bird type)
  • Bird bath or spray bottle
  • Bird toys (a variety)
  • Cage liner material
  • Perches
Optional Supplies
  • Special food holders (for fresh fruits and special foods such as egg biscuit)
  • Treat food (for training)
  • Extra perches (available in a variety of shapes and sizes, including a mineral perch)
  • Cage cover
  • Cuttlefish bone
  • Mineral block
  • Oyster shell (may be contained in bird grit mixture)
  • Vitamin/mineral supplements and specialty foods
  • Grooming supplies
  • Bird nail clippers
  • Sharp scissors for wing trimming
  • First aid supplies
  • Non-irritating skin disinfectant for birds
  • Tweezers or needle-nose pliers
  • Blood-stopping product
  • Cage cleaning supplies (soap and brushes)
  • Cage/aviary disinfectant
Grooming Supplies
  • Bird nail clippers
  • Sharp scissors for wing trimming
First Aid Supplies
  • Non-irritating skin disinfectant for birds
  • Tweezers or needle-nose pliers
