Companionship for Your Gerbil

Your gerbil is a highly sociable animal that enjoys the company of other gerbils as well as humans. In the wild, gerbils live in a colony or group environment where they sleep, groom and play with each other. Gerbils are used to - and prefer - companionship.

Ideally, your gerbil should be introduced to group living at five to six weeks of age. If possible, those who share an enclosure should be the same sex, age and size and from the same litter. If you introduce a new gerbil to an existing pet, always clean the cage first so the space will be neutral and free of identifying scent. If your gerbil fights or shows resistance, remove the newcomer and try again later.

Your gerbil will also enjoy attention and interaction from you. Once you've tamed your gerbil, proper lifting and handling are essential to avoid stress and injury. A soft rub on your pet's back and a gentle scratch behind his ears will indicate love and affection your gerbil is certain to enjoy.
