If there is balance in your aquarium, peace and harmony can easily be maintained.

• Avoid overcrowding. Apply the fish-per-square-inch ratio to your setup to determine the ideal quantity of fish your tank should hold. Remember to take the growth factor into consideration.
• Choose compatible species. Recognize that many species do not live well together, and be mindful of the number of fish in each species.
• Separate the carnivores from the herbivores. You will not want to witness the unpleasant consequences of putting them together in the same tank.
• Pay attention to the level in the tank that each type of fish prefer. For example, some species prefer swimming and feeding at the upper level and some prefer being on the bottom. By balancing the levels, the competition for space is minimized.
• Landscape your tank properly. Ensure that you have enough hiding places for those fish that need them.
