Nutritional Differences Between Flake, Pellet, Freeze Dried and Live Fish Foods

The various kinds of fish foods provide you the opportunity to vary the diets of your fish both to meet their nutritional needs and to provide interest and stimulation.

Manufactured foods such as flakes and pellets are generally made from cereals, vegetables, fish and meats, with necessary vitamins and minerals added. Most of these are for multiple fish types, but some formulas are designed for specific species.

The flakes, tablets, pellets and granular forms are packaged to aid you in regulating the amount delivered to the aquarium and the method of delivery such as floating, slowly sinking, immediate sinking or even adhering the food to the inside glass. These types of foods are mostly preferred by herbivore and bottom scavenging fishes but can be used by all types.

Live foods and their freeze dried equivalents have the same nutritional value. These are especially high in the proteins your fish require. Carnivorous fish require some level of live or freeze dried foods. Naturally, the live version provides an additional stimulus to exercise your fish's instincts.
