Senior Gerbil Diets

Gerbils that are two years or older are considered to be geriatric. As your gerbil ages, she will do better on a low-protein (10-11%) and low-fat (3-5%) diet. The lower protein amount allows better kidney function, while the lower fat amount prevents obesity.

Provide nourishing foods for your geriatric gerbil:

Grains, Pellets and Dried Vegetables: As your gerbil's weight increases, adjust the quantity of premium gerbil or gerbil mix that you're giving her to one that includes a smaller proportion of nuts and seeds. The mix should still consist of wheat, barley, rolled oats, maize, peanuts or sunflower seeds and green pellets to keep her teeth in good condition.

Fresh fruits and vegetables: Vegetables and fruit such as celery, carrots, and cabbage, apples, bananas and berries are important for your geriatric gerbil. But do not offer iceberg lettuce, as this low nutrient food will only interfere with sound nutrition. Fruits and vegetables are considered treats. For that reason, offer them sparingly as too much can cause digestive problems such as upset stomach and diarrhea. Remove any uneaten fruit and vegetables within 24 hours.
