FLUFFED FEATHERS

Is your bird having a bad hair day? If his feather-do appears ruffled and fluffed away from his body, chances are something's wrong. Healthy feathers should be sleek, clean, well aligned, and close to the body.

Causes

Cool temperatures may make your pal ruffle his feathers. Although birds acclimate well to average household temperatures, be cautious of extreme temperature fluctuations and keep your bird's cage away from drafts. If a cool climate isn't to blame, your pet may be under the weather. Sick birds often sit quietly on their perches with eyes closed and feathers fluffed out.

Almost any disease can cause fluffed feathers. Your bird is adept at hiding his illness so it's likely that he may have been sick for some time. If you notice your pet's feathers are ruffled, seek immediate veterinary care.

You may think your fluffed friend is simply not sporting his usual style, but he could be suffering from a serious disease. Consult your veterinarian to ensure your bird looks and feels his best.
