As many people have realized, a fish in a bowl can make a great centerpiece for any party, wedding reception or other event. Either as a standalone or as part of a larger piece, fish add beauty, peace and serenity to the table where your guests can enjoy their time to the fullest. Depending on the culture, fish can represent many positive things such as family, health, success and balance; all of which make them a desirable attendee for your party.
As with all animals, it is important that the health and welfare of the animal come first. The best fish to have in a bowl is the Betta fish (betta splendens), which requires little space and due to specialized breathing organs does not need moving water. Only one can be kept per bowl and it is important to follow the guidelines found in our Betta Care Sheet (PDF). Be sure to purchase the other required items in addition to the bowls. Also, if you plan to give them away at the end of the party, be sure that the people understand that a fish is a pet and what its requirements are. We recommend printing a copy of the Care Sheet (PDF) for each centerpiece you have. Provide them to those guests who take the centerpieces home.
