Royal Canin Canine Health Nutrition Chihuahua 28

Royal Canin By Brent Mayabb, DVM (Royal Canin USA)

Formulated specifically for Chihuahuas

Small in stature, but large in character, the Chihuahua has become one of America's most popular breeds. Chihuahuas were first bred in Mexico hundreds of years ago, but are the new stars of Hollywood and Madison Avenue. However, many breeders and pet owners have known for years what loyal and loving companions these dogs make. At Royal Canin, we too have been aware of the special traits of this wonderful breed and have designed our Chihuahua 28 with them in mind.

Many Chihuahuas spend most or all of their time indoors. In some cases, the dogs are paper-trained. For these pets, it is wise to choose a highly-digestible diet to limit the unpleasant odors associated this lifestyle. Odors come from fermentation of undigested protein by intestinal bacteria. To help reduce these odors, Chihuahua 28 contains a limited amount of highly-digestible protein, and a single source of highly-digestible carbohydrate (rice). The more digestible the protein, the less of the undigested portion that makes it to intestinal bacteria to be fermented. Also incorporated into this diet is fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) that helps reduce pathogenic bacteria.

As many Chihuahua owners know, the breed has a propensity to have dental issues. Tartar accumulation is common in Chihuahuas. This process can lead to gingivitis, gum recession, and ultimately, tooth loss. Chihuahua 28 combats dental disease in two ways. First, the kibble is extruded longitudinally. This special type of extrusion allows a deeper penetration of the tooth before the kibble breaks and has a brushing effect to prevent plaque. Second, a calcium-binding agent prevents tartar formation. It holds calcium with a magnet-like effect so that it can not be incorporated into tartar by oral bacteria. The calcium is later released in the intestinal tract.

A long lifespan is common in Chihuahuas. Because of this, many age-related diseases affect Chihuahuas. To help increase longevity, we have incorporated antioxidants into Chihuahua 28. The formula contains a powerful complex of vitamin E, vitamin C, and polyphenols from green tea and grapes to help reduce oxidative damage to cells. To maximize heart health, taurine and L-carnitine are present, as is a moderate amount of sodium.

Many Chihuahuas are very picky eaters. Their lifestyle may involve their owners feeding human food to provide "variety." Royal Canin has added our Exclusive Savor system to please even the most finicky dogs. We combine high quality ingredients, flavor enhancers, small kibble, and packaging designed to ensure freshness to provide superior palatability.

Once worshipped by the Aztecs in Mexico, the breed has found similar status in many homes today. Chihuahuas make wonderful companions and are very loyal to their owners. Their size and physiology are as unique as their personality, and to this end, we have designed a food that will provide specialized nutrition for these traits. ¡Viva Chihuahua 28!
