Evaluating a Dog’s Temperament

Evaluating a Dogs Temperament

Find out if your dog is pushy, passive, or somewhere in between.

You may think its adorable when your puppy demands the best spot on the couch or cowers when the dishwasher turns on. But as your little one grows up, his personality will likely continue to influence his behaviors - and they may not be as cute.

Before you adopt a dog, learn about his temperament and make sure his personality is a good fit for your household. Then use training to head off any potential behavior problems.

Dogs temperaments generally fall into three categories: assertive, responsive, and shy.

Assertive Dogs
Pushiness is a sign of an assertive dog. He thinks hes the leader of the pack, and he may be forceful or overly confident. Assertive dogs make good pets for firm adults, but they might overpower children.

At their worst, these dogs can develop a behavior disorder known as dominance aggression, which can be dangerous. So be prepared to send your hopeful leader to hard-core obedience school if he needs it.

Responsive Dogs
Whether youre camping in Colorado or making a trip to the supermarket, dont expect to go anywhere without this pooch. He enjoys people and wants to be a part of everything youre doing. With a bit of training, your dog will be a law-abiding canine, and hell always be ready for a romp in the park with the family.

Shy Dogs
You might find this dog hiding under the bed when you get home from work. Shy dogs avoid loud noises and boisterous activity, and at their worst they can be fear-biters. But with gentle handling, a shy dog can become a well-adjusted adult.

Signs of Temperament
Are your pets parents world-champion lickers or scrappy, one-eyed mongrels? One of the best ways to predict your pets temperament is to look at his parents. They are powerful influences, so make sure they dont exhibit any nasty behaviors. If they growl and bite, chances are their offspring will too.

Performing temperament tests can give you a sneak peak at your dogs adult personality. Keep in mind that environment affects a dogs behavior, too, so a pup from the wrong side of the tracks may have more to overcome. You can also use temperament tests on adult dogs.

If you want expert advice, consider taking along a dog trainer or behaviorist when youre looking for a pet. They can help you pick the right pup and give you stellar training tips.

The best dog for you will probably be a pet who matches your own personality. So choose carefully. After all, your dog will share your life for years to come.
